When a basic design is presented to us, we then produce a preliminary plan which is a basic floor plan with line drawing elevations of the home. This is the important time to 'tweak' the size and layout of the home to suit the requirements of our client. Once the preliminary plan is approved, we undertake the task of designing the home from the foundation to the roof. Some of the structural considerations in timber home design include, beam loading to the foundation, subfloor blocking and reinforcement , ensuring that the roof load is adequately distributed to the timber walls and roof component design. When the structural elements are defined, we then incorporate the desired living space to the building.
Since the structural components in most timber buildings are also visible, it is important to design these components to be attractive as well as functional. The combined result of the proper design of visible structural members and an understanding of the long term effects of loading and shrinkage of wood members, should be a structure that is able to support itself, resist the forces acting upon it and be magnificent at the same time.
